The FAUCI TOPPS CARD is OVERRATED! Watch THIS Before You Buy
So there was some funny news that came out of Topps this week. Dr. Anthony Fauci, I'm going to try to get this correct here, he's the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Boy that sounds like some bureaucracy there. Apparently he's the guy who you see on the news all the time talking about the coronavirus, and Topps decided to come out with a baseball card of him throwing out the first pitch at the Nationals game. Of course they're in D.C., the Nationals won the World Series, so that just kind of makes sense. They came out with this card and it apparently set a print run, so how many cards they made, of 51,512. They were sold for about $10 each so you're looking at about $515,000 in sales in one day. That's America for you right there.
Obviously this is strictly publicity in my opinion on what Topps is doing here. No shame man, great for them. The previous print run for any card it looks like was 19,396. They had for Vladimir Guerrero Junior's first hit card. So Fauci's card did about 265 times more than any current baseball player who most collectors probably know. These are one of the specialty cards that they make so they sent a print run for that particular card. These Fauci cards I guess are selling between $150 to $190 right now on eBay which is a 1500 times increase.
So should you be buying these Fauci cards? I'm going to talk about it from an investment standpoint because obviously if you're buying these at $150 to $190 you're thinking these are probably going to be going up in value. You can't absolutely want to have that card that bad especially since you had a chance of buying it at ten dollars. So my answer is no. Here's why.
Number one it's a very high print run. Rare cards, limited edition cards, specialty cards, and short print cards, those typically sell for a higher price than non-rare cards. I guess that's the proper English term for that. So nothing special about this card. It's not autographed, it has no special parallels to it or anything like that. It's just a card, so nothing very special about it.
Number two, this is at the hype of the hysteria and you probably don't want to be buying things at the hype of the hysteria right now. Remember the Topps 2020 project? A lot of those cards went way down, so just something to keep in mind. Try not to buy at the top end of the hysteria.
Number three, in case you didn't know he's not a baseball player. So he's not going to be getting in the hall of fame, he's not going to win any rookie of the years, or MVPs. We all know the statistics. When players actually win those awards it always adds value to them and increases their prices and value. This does not have that opportunity unless he gets into like the government hall of fame. Do they have something like that? I don't know. So that's something to keep in mind as well.
Number four and this is probably the point I want to hammer home with you right now. For roughly the same price you can buy a raw and ungraded LeBron James 2003. That's his rookie year. We all know who LeBron James is. I just did a video on his cards. The Fleer exclusive, this is his rookie card, for basically the same price, they're worth about $150 to $180 depending on the condition of them. If you get it graded and you get an eight or above, that is a $500 card right now. So what do you think is going to be worth more in 20 years? A LeBron James rookie card that's graded a PSA eight or a Dr. Anthony Fauci? Let's just say it gets graded a PSA 10 with a print run of 51,000. What do you think? Use your head. I'm trying to save you guys money and help you guys make some money in the long run. Is LeBron James a worse bet than Fauci? The obvious answer is no on that one.
Number five, once this whole virus thing is over, I mean do you really think you're gonna hear from this guy again? I mean in 20 years, let's say you buy this card and you're just kind of rummaging through some things, maybe you're moving or something and you're throwing stuff out, and you're like, “Oh remember this, remember this guy when we bought these. We paid $200 for these.” You're not going to do that with a LeBron James rookie card. You're going to know where that thing is and you're going to be following the value of that thing. There are other cards that you can buy for similar prices that are obviously going way higher than Fauci's.
So this is just a perfect reminder of never buy when the hype is at its highest unless you are 100% certain that this card is going to be an absolute monster, and you're sold on it, and you're all in. So maybe you're all in on Fauci, I don't know, but to me I would probably be buying a LeBron James rookie card. It feels very sad that I had to address that, but I felt like I had the need to put together this video.
