Again, PSM did a great job!

Choosing the right pen for an autographed helmet can make a major difference in how the finished autograph looks.
Unlike a photo or sports card, helmets come in different colors, finishes, logo sizes, and designs. You also have to consider whether you're getting a mini helmet or full-size helmet signed, whether you're adding inscriptions, and whether you plan to add more autographs later.
After handling hundreds of autograph signings, we've found that there isn't one pen that's perfect for every helmet. Instead, the best choice depends on the helmet and what you're trying to accomplish.
In this guide, we'll break down some of our favorite pens for autographed helmets, including Sharpie, Pentel N50, DecoColor, POSCA, and Molotow.
Mini helmets are usually fairly straightforward.
Because there isn't much signing space, we generally prefer thinner pens that allow the athlete to create a clean autograph without taking up the entire side of the helmet.
This becomes even more important when you're adding an inscription—or multiple inscriptions—to the autograph.
For a black autograph on a mini helmet, a black Sharpie is one of the simplest and most reliable options.
There's usually no reason to complicate things with a paint pen if black Sharpie provides the contrast you need.
It's thin enough to work well in the limited signing space and gives you room for inscriptions.
The same applies to blue Sharpie.
If blue provides good contrast against the helmet, it can produce a very clean autograph without requiring a paint pen.
Silver Sharpie can also work surprisingly well on mini helmets.
The key is making sure the pen is flowing properly before the athlete uses it. A weak or dying silver Sharpie isn't going to give you the result you want.
Always test the pen first.
Paint pens become more useful when you need colors that a traditional Sharpie can't provide effectively.
For example, suppose you're getting a Pittsburgh Steelers helmet signed and want the autograph in white or yellow.
That's where paint pens really shine.
Some of our favorite options include:
We've become particularly fond of POSCA pens because they can produce extremely clean, crisp autographs while offering several useful tip sizes.
This is something collectors sometimes overlook.
Not every helmet gives the athlete the same amount of signing space.
Compare something like a Raiders mini helmet with a Browns helmet. One has a prominent side logo taking up valuable real estate, while another may provide significantly more open space.
The larger the logo, the less room you have for the autograph.
That can affect both pen type and tip size.
If you're adding multiple inscriptions, using a slightly thinner pen can make a huge difference.
Full-size helmets present a different challenge.
You might assume that because the helmet itself is larger, there is plenty of room for an autograph.
That's not necessarily true.
Modern helmet designs can have large logos, ventilation holes and other features that reduce the usable signing area.
That's why we choose pens for full-size helmets based not only on color but also on the amount of available signing space.
For black autographs on full-size helmets, our favorite pen is the Pentel N50.
This has become one of our go-to autograph pens.
The black is bold, the ink flows extremely well, and in our experience it tends to produce very consistent signatures without the streaking you sometimes see from other markers.
If we're looking for a bold black autograph on a full-size helmet, the Pentel N50 is our first choice.
A black Sharpie can certainly work too, especially when space is limited or you're trying to fit numerous autographs onto the same helmet.
For silver, DecoColor silver paint pens remain one of our most common choices.
They can create a bright autograph with excellent contrast against darker helmets.
However, we've occasionally seen silver paint ink "spider" slightly after being applied to certain helmet surfaces. In other words, the ink can spread outward into tiny lines rather than maintaining a perfectly crisp edge.
It doesn't happen every time, but it is something collectors should know about.
A silver Sharpie is another option.
Silver Sharpie can look perfectly good on a helmet as long as the marker is fresh and flowing properly.
For gold, we generally like DecoColor.
Gold can look fantastic on the right helmet, particularly when the helmet's colors complement the autograph.
Again, tip size matters.
If you've got a large, open signing area and want the autograph to really stand out, you can use a broader paint pen.
If space is tighter or you're adding an inscription, a fine tip may be the better option.
This is where Molotow and POSCA really become useful.
Molotow offers some excellent specialty colors.
For example, we've used Molotow's traffic red for Kansas City Chiefs memorabilia with great results.
Greens can also look fantastic.
Purple is another color where you have several good choices. DecoColor, POSCA and Molotow all offer purples, although the exact shades vary.
If you're trying to match an autograph color to a team's colors, test the pens first and see which shade looks best with the helmet.
Both are excellent paint pens.
We've increasingly used POSCA because we like how clean and crisp the ink looks. The colors are vibrant, and the available tip sizes make POSCA useful for everything from sports cards to helmets.
Molotow is another excellent option, particularly when you want a slightly broader signature.
For example, a roughly 4mm Molotow tip can look great when you're getting a single autograph on a full-size helmet and have plenty of signing space.
A thinner option can make more sense when you're dealing with limited space or multiple autographs.
There's no universal winner between the two.
It comes down to the athlete, helmet, autograph color and available space.
This may be the most important question to ask before choosing your pen.
What is the end goal for the helmet?
If you're getting one athlete to sign a full-size helmet and that's the only autograph you ever plan to add, you can afford to go larger and bolder.
But suppose you're building a Hall of Fame helmet and eventually want 20, 30 or even more autographs.
Now signing space becomes extremely valuable.
In that situation, a traditional black or blue Sharpie can be an excellent choice because it creates a clean autograph without consuming too much space.
A broad paint pen might look fantastic for autograph number one but create problems once you start trying to fit autograph number 15.
Plan ahead.
Inscriptions require additional space.
If you're getting an athlete to add a Hall of Fame year, jersey number, championship inscription or multiple career achievements, take that into account before selecting the pen.
A slightly thinner pen can make the autograph and inscriptions significantly more legible.
You don't want to choose a giant broad-tip paint pen and then discover there isn't enough room for everything you ordered.
This is one of the simplest things you can do to improve your chances of getting a great autograph.
Test the pen first.
Make sure the ink is flowing correctly.
Look at the thickness of the line.
Make sure the color provides enough contrast.
If it's a paint pen, make sure the tip is properly primed.
Then consider whether that line thickness will work with the athlete's autograph and the available signing area.
A pen can be perfect for one helmet and completely wrong for another.
If we had to simplify our helmet pen choices, these are some of the options we use most frequently:
Black: Pentel N50 for bold black autographs; Sharpie when a thinner signature is preferred.
Blue: Blue Sharpie.
Silver: DecoColor silver paint pen or silver Sharpie.
Gold: DecoColor gold paint pen.
White and Yellow: POSCA is one of our preferred options.
Red, Green, Purple and specialty colors: POSCA or Molotow depending on the exact color and tip size needed.
The most important takeaway is that there isn't one best autograph pen for every helmet.
The best pen is the one that matches the helmet color, signing space, athlete's signature and your long-term plans for the item.
For a bold black autograph on a full-size helmet, we prefer the Pentel N50. It produces a strong black line and has been very consistent for us. On mini helmets or multi-signed helmets where space is limited, a black Sharpie can work extremely well.
A silver DecoColor paint pen is one of our most commonly used choices. A fresh silver Sharpie can also produce a good-looking autograph, particularly on mini helmets.
We like POSCA paint pens for white autographs. They provide vibrant color and are available in useful tip sizes.
It depends on the helmet. Black and blue Sharpies work extremely well when there is enough contrast. Paint pens are usually preferable when you want colors such as white, yellow, gold, red or other specialty colors.
Yes. POSCA pens have become one of our favorite options because they produce clean, vibrant lines and come in several useful colors and tip sizes.
Yes. Molotow makes several excellent colors and tip sizes. They can be particularly useful when you want a bold specialty-colored autograph.
Generally, we'd lean toward a thinner marker such as a Sharpie. When you're trying to fit many autographs onto one helmet, preserving signing space becomes important.
It depends on how much signing space you have. A broader tip can look great for one large autograph, while a fine tip is usually better for smaller signing areas, inscriptions or multi-signed helmets.
Absolutely. Always test the pen to make sure it's flowing correctly, the color looks right and the line isn't too thick or thin for the available signing area.
Yes. Some athletes have large, sweeping signatures while others have compact autographs. The speed at which an athlete signs, the size of the autograph and whether you're adding inscriptions can all influence the ideal pen.
