Whether you're buying your first signed baseball or adding a rare jersey to your collection, one of the most important things to understand is sports memorabilia authentication. Authentication helps verify that an autograph is genuine and gives collectors greater confidence when buying, selling, or displaying signed memorabilia.

What Is Authentication?
Authentication is the process of having a trusted third-party company determine whether an autograph is genuine.
When an item is authenticated, the company will either:
- Apply an authentication hologram directly to the item.
- Issue a Letter of Authenticity (LOA).
Both methods allow collectors to verify the autograph through the authentication company's records.
Authentication Holograms
Today, the vast majority of signed sports memorabilia is authenticated using a hologram sticker placed directly on the item.
Each hologram includes a unique certification number that can be verified online.
Many modern holograms also include a QR code that can be scanned with your phone, taking you directly to the authentication company's verification page.
Examples include:
- Signed jerseys
- Signed footballs

- Signed helmets

This has become the industry standard because it's fast, secure, and easy for collectors to verify.
What Is a Letter of Authenticity (LOA)?
A Letter of Authenticity (LOA) is typically reserved for more valuable or higher-end memorabilia.
Rather than only receiving a hologram, you'll receive a printed certificate that generally includes:
- A photo of the exact item
- The authentication number
- A description of the item
- The authenticator's opinion that the autograph is genuine
For example, if you submit a signed Mickey Mantle baseball for authentication, the authentication company may issue an LOA featuring photographs of that exact baseball.
LOAs are commonly used for vintage, rare, or high-value collectibles.
Witness Authentication
Witness authentication is considered the strongest form of authentication for newly signed memorabilia.
With witness authentication:
- A representative from the authentication company is physically present at the autograph signing.
- The representative watches the athlete sign the item.
- Immediately after signing, the authentication hologram is applied to the item.
Because the autograph is witnessed in person, there is no need to compare it to previously authenticated examples.
Basic Authentication
Basic authentication is different from witness authentication.
Instead of observing the autograph being signed, the authentication company examines the signature afterward and compares it to known authentic examples.
Authenticators evaluate characteristics such as:
- Signature style
- Slant
- Size
- Writing speed
- Pen pressure
- Overall consistency
Based on these observations, they determine whether they believe the autograph is authentic.
Unlike witness authentication, this process is opinion-based because the autograph was not actually witnessed.
The Three Major Authentication Companies
The three most recognized autograph authentication companies in the United States are:

- Beckett Authentication Services (BAS)
- James Spence Authentication (JSA)
