Again, PSM did a great job!

Getting a basketball autographed sounds simple enough: pick a pen, hand it to the athlete, and get the signature.
But anyone who has handled enough autograph signings knows that the pen you choose can make a major difference in how the finished basketball looks.
Different basketballs use different materials, colors, and finishes. A pen that looks great on an authentic NBA basketball might not be the best choice for a white-panel basketball. Some paint pens can also be inconsistent, while certain permanent markers work extremely well on synthetic surfaces.
After handling thousands of autographed items over the years at Powers Sports Memorabilia, we've developed a few go-to pens that consistently produce great-looking basketball autographs.
Here's what we recommend.
For autograph purposes, most basketballs fall into a few basic categories:
The good news is that choosing a pen for basketballs is relatively straightforward once you understand the surface you're dealing with.
For authentic NBA and replica basketballs, our pen choices are generally very similar.
White-panel basketballs are a different story because of their synthetic material.
Let's go through each one.
For a traditional authentic NBA basketball, our first choice is usually a silver DecoColor broad paint marker.
Silver provides excellent contrast against the darker orange/brown surface of the basketball and creates the classic look most collectors expect from a signed NBA ball.
The broad tip also gives the autograph some thickness and presence.
For a single-signed basketball, that's generally exactly what you want.
Silver DecoColor Broad Paint Marker
It's simple, bold, and consistently produces an attractive autograph.
You don't need to overthink it.
You can.
Black actually looks better on many basketballs than people might expect.
This is different from something like a dark authentic NFL football, where a black signature can almost disappear into the leather.
Basketballs tend to have a lighter surface, so a bold black autograph can still provide enough contrast to look good.
If you prefer black, our favorite option is generally the Pentel N50.
The N50 produces a strong, bold black signature and has proven to be a very reliable pen across a variety of autograph surfaces.
That said, if you're unsure which direction to go, silver remains our preferred choice for most authentic NBA basketballs.
Replica NBA basketballs and many indoor/outdoor basketballs can generally be treated the same way as authentic NBA basketballs when choosing an autograph pen.
Again, our first choice is usually:
Silver DecoColor Broad Paint Marker
The silver stands out nicely against the basketball and gives the autograph a premium appearance.
If you'd rather have a black signature, the Pentel N50 is another excellent option.
One thing we generally don't recommend is relying on a black DecoColor paint marker.
We've used a lot of paint pens over the years, and the silver DecoColor markers have been very dependable for us.
The black versions haven't been nearly as consistent.
Even with a new marker that's been properly prepped and tested before the signing, we've experienced black DecoColor markers that streak.
That creates an unnecessary risk during an autograph signing.
Remember, you may only get one opportunity for the athlete to sign your basketball.
You don't want to discover halfway through the signature that your marker isn't flowing correctly.
When we want black, we'd rather use the Pentel N50.
If a black DecoColor is working perfectly, it can certainly produce a nice-looking signature. We simply haven't found it consistent enough to make it our first choice.
NCAA-style basketballs can be a little different because many have a noticeably lighter orange surface.
That lighter color makes black an excellent option.
A bold black signature against a lighter orange basketball can look extremely sharp.
This can work especially well for basketball legends associated with the college game or when you're putting together a themed basketball.
For example, this type of basketball can make a great display piece for players such as Larry Bird or Magic Johnson.
For these basketballs, our preferred black marker is once again:
It produces the bold, dark signature we're looking for without some of the consistency issues we've experienced with black paint markers.
Silver can still work, but the lighter surface makes black particularly attractive.
White-panel basketballs require a slightly different approach.
Our preferred choice for these is very straightforward:
The black signature creates excellent contrast against the white panel and gives you a clean, traditional-looking autograph.
If you'd like a different autograph color, a standard Sharpie can also work.
For example, depending on the team colors or the particular display you're creating, you might decide to use blue, red, or another Sharpie color.
But if someone asks us what we'd choose without any other considerations, we'd go with the black Pentel N50.
Collectors should understand something about white-panel basketballs before spending significant money getting one autographed.
The white panels are generally made from a synthetic leather material, and the appearance of the autograph can change over time.
We've seen this same issue with white-panel footballs.
The ink can gradually change color as the basketball ages. What initially looks like a crisp black or blue autograph may look somewhat different a year or two later.
That doesn't necessarily mean anything was done incorrectly during the signing.
It's simply a characteristic of the material.
White-panel basketballs can still make fantastic display pieces, especially because they provide such a clean area for the autograph. Just understand that they may not age exactly like an autograph on an authentic basketball.
A simple way to think about our recommendations is:
| Basketball Type | Recommended Pen | Color |
|---|---|---|
| Authentic NBA Basketball | DecoColor Broad Paint Marker | Silver |
| NBA Replica Basketball | DecoColor Broad Paint Marker | Silver |
| Indoor/Outdoor Basketball | DecoColor Broad Paint Marker | Silver |
| Lighter NCAA Basketball | Pentel N50 | Black |
| White-Panel Basketball | Pentel N50 | Black |
These aren't absolute rules.
Autograph collecting is also about personal preference.
If you love how a black signature looks on your authentic basketball, there's nothing wrong with choosing black.
Likewise, certain team colors or display setups might make another color more attractive.
These recommendations are simply based on the combinations we've found to be the most consistent and visually appealing.
Choosing the correct pen is only half the battle.
You also need to protect the autograph after the basketball has been signed.
Basketballs generally haven't given us as many problems with signatures sticking to plastic as we've seen with authentic footballs. Still, it's smart to be careful.
If you're shipping an autographed basketball, tissue paper can provide an additional layer of protection between the autograph and any plastic packaging.
Wrap the basketball carefully in tissue paper before placing it inside a plastic bag or other packaging.
The goal is simple:
Don't allow plastic to sit directly against the autograph if you can avoid it.
We're not big fans of putting shrink wrap directly over an autograph.
The concern is similar to using a plastic bag directly against the signature. You don't want plastic adhering to the ink and potentially pulling away part of the autograph when it's removed.
Shrink wrap can be useful before an item is signed.
For example, if you have an older basketball you're sending to a signing and don't want to put painter's tape directly against the leather, shrink wrapping the unsigned basketball can be a useful way to protect it during transit.
Once the basketball is autographed, however, we'd rather avoid plastic directly against the signature.
Regardless of which pen you're using, one rule applies to every autograph signing:
Test the pen first.
Never assume a brand-new paint marker is ready to go simply because you just opened it.
Paint pens need to be properly prepped and flowing smoothly before they're handed to an athlete.
You want to know exactly how the marker is writing before the athlete touches it to your basketball.
This is especially important with paint markers because poor paint flow can create streaks or inconsistent lines in the autograph.
Once an athlete starts signing, you can't rewind the process.
If you want to keep things simple, here's what we use.
For authentic NBA basketballs and most replica or indoor/outdoor basketballs, we prefer a silver DecoColor broad paint marker.
For lighter NCAA-style basketballs, we really like the appearance of a black Pentel N50.
For white-panel basketballs, the black Pentel N50 is also our preferred choice.
Other Sharpie colors can work well on white panels if you're looking for a particular team-color combination.
And while black DecoColor paint markers are available, we've found them too inconsistent to make them our preferred black autograph pen.
The biggest thing is matching the pen to the surface and testing it thoroughly before the signing.
A great autograph deserves a pen that's going to make it look its best.
For most authentic NBA basketballs, we recommend a silver DecoColor broad paint marker. Silver creates excellent contrast against the basketball's darker surface and gives the signature a bold appearance.
Yes. Black can look surprisingly good on an NBA basketball because the surface is lighter than an authentic NFL football. If you want black, we prefer the Pentel N50.
Our preferred choice is a black Pentel N50. It produces a bold signature with excellent contrast against the white panel.
It depends on the basketball. Sharpies can work well on white-panel basketballs, particularly if you want colors other than black. For traditional authentic NBA basketballs, we generally prefer a silver paint marker.
You can, but it isn't our first choice. We've found black DecoColor markers can be inconsistent and sometimes streak. When we want a bold black autograph, we generally prefer the Pentel N50.
They can. White-panel basketballs typically use synthetic materials, and we've seen ink colors change as the basketball ages. It's something collectors should be aware of when choosing this type of basketball.
We recommend protecting the autograph so plastic isn't pressed directly against it. Wrapping the basketball in tissue paper before placing it inside a plastic bag is a simple way to provide additional protection.
We generally don't recommend putting shrink wrap directly over an autograph because plastic can potentially interact with or stick to the ink. Shrink wrap can be useful for protecting an unsigned basketball while sending it to a signing.
