Again, PSM did a great job!

Once an item has been autographed, one of the most important rules for protecting it is also one of the simplest:
Leave the autograph alone.
Collectors sometimes ask whether they should clean an autograph, wipe it down, spray something over it, or apply a protective coating. In most situations, you should not do any of those things.
Once an autograph has been signed and the ink has dried, your goal should be to avoid touching the signature itself and protect the item from conditions that can cause fading or damage.
There are a few situations where an autograph can be removed immediately after signing if something goes wrong and the athlete needs to sign the item again. However, those situations depend heavily on the material being signed.
Let's look at how to properly clean and handle autographed sports memorabilia.
Generally, no.
You should never attempt to clean the autograph itself after an item has been signed.
Don't wipe it.
Don't rub it.
Don't polish it.
Don't spray cleaners or protective products over it.
Even an autograph that appears completely dry can potentially be damaged by improper handling.
If your signed memorabilia needs dusting or cleaning, avoid the autograph completely. The safest approach is to protect the item properly from the beginning so that cleaning around the signature becomes unnecessary.
Your hands naturally contain oils, moisture, dirt, and other substances that can transfer to an item.
That's why we recommend never touching the actual autograph.
This is particularly important with items that are handled frequently, such as:
When handling the collectible, hold it in an area away from the autograph whenever possible.
For cards and photos, handle them carefully by their edges and place them into appropriate protection.
For larger memorabilia, identify where the autograph is located before picking up the item.
Another question collectors sometimes ask is whether they should spray a clear coat or some type of protective substance over an autograph.
We do not recommend doing this.
There isn't a spray that you need to apply to your autograph to preserve it.
Adding a coating introduces another substance that could interact with the ink or the underlying material. It can also permanently alter the collectible.
Instead, protect the autograph through proper storage and display.
The most important steps are still:
Keep the autograph out of direct sunlight and maintain it in a stable, room-temperature environment.
If you're displaying the item, UV-protected glass or acrylic can provide another layer of protection.
This is where things become different.
During an autograph signing, an athlete occasionally makes a mistake.
Maybe the pen skips.
Maybe the athlete accidentally smudges the signature.
Maybe something goes wrong with the placement.
On certain surfaces, it may be possible to remove the autograph and have the athlete sign the item again.
But this is something you should approach extremely carefully.
Do not assume that because an autograph can be removed from one item, it can be removed from another.
Some materials absorb ink permanently.
Others have surfaces that may allow the ink to be removed.
Some glossy sports cards can potentially be wiped clean immediately after a signing mistake.
A good example is a modern glossy card such as a Panini Prizm card.
Depending on the ink and card surface, an alcohol wipe may remove the signature so the card can be signed again.
However, this should not be treated as a universal method for sports cards.
Different cards use different coatings and finishes, and attempting to remove an autograph could potentially damage the card's surface.
This matters even more if you plan on having the card graded.
Surface condition is one of the factors considered during card grading, so damaging the finish while attempting to remove an autograph could affect the card.
If you're unsure, don't experiment on an important card.
Certain autographs on finished wooden baseball bats can sometimes be removed when a signing mistake occurs.
One product we've used for situations like this is PEC-12.
It can be strong enough to remove certain inks from some finished surfaces.
However, there is an important warning:
PEC-12 may affect the finish of the item.
You're not simply removing ink. You may also change the appearance or finish underneath it.
That's why autograph removal should generally be viewed as a last resort when an athlete has made a signing mistake—not routine maintenance for memorabilia.
Depending on the helmet's surface and the type of pen used, an autograph may also sometimes be removable from a football helmet.
Again, PEC-12 is one product that can potentially be used.
The same warning applies.
It is a strong product and may affect the helmet's finish. You should never assume it is safe for every helmet, paint, coating, decal, or specialty finish.
If an autograph has already been completed successfully, leave it alone.
This is completely different.
Once ink has penetrated fabric, you generally don't have the same ability to simply wipe the autograph away.
Trying to remove a signature from a jersey could spread the ink, discolor the fabric, or permanently damage the item.
This is one reason preparation is so important before an athlete signs.
You want to have the correct:
Getting those details right before the athlete signs is much easier than trying to correct a problem afterward.
Handling becomes even more important when you're sending an item to another autograph signing.
Suppose you already have five autographs on a jersey and you're adding a sixth.
You aren't only protecting the autograph you're about to receive. You're protecting the five signatures already on the item.
We recommend placing previously signed memorabilia in an appropriate protective bag when shipping it and clearly identifying where the next athlete should sign.
Once the item arrives home, carefully remove it from its packaging without rubbing against the signatures.
One of the easiest ways to ruin a great autograph is handling it too quickly.
Different pens dry at different speeds, and different surfaces affect drying time.
Paint pens in particular need sufficient time to dry.
At our autograph signings, proper handling immediately after an item is signed is extremely important. You don't want another item, piece of packaging, hand, or surface coming into contact with wet ink.
A perfect signature can become a smeared signature in seconds.
Once it has been signed, give the autograph time to dry and leave it alone.
The best way to "clean" an autograph is to make sure it never needs cleaning.
Proper storage and display can reduce exposure to dust, dirt, fingerprints, sunlight, and environmental conditions.
Use protective display cases when appropriate.
Keep signed jerseys properly framed or stored.
Protect cards with appropriate holders.
Keep signed baseballs, footballs, basketballs, helmets, and other memorabilia away from unnecessary handling.
And most importantly, keep your collection away from direct sunlight and extreme environmental conditions.
Collectors can sometimes overcomplicate autograph preservation.
You don't need to constantly clean an autograph.
You don't need to spray something over it.
You don't need to polish it.
You don't need to apply a special coating.
In most cases, the less you do to the autograph itself, the better.
Handle the collectible carefully, don't touch the signature, keep it out of direct sunlight, maintain a stable indoor environment, and use proper storage or display protection.
Your goal isn't to continually maintain the ink.
Your goal is to protect it from the things that can damage it.
Generally, you should not clean or wipe the autograph itself. Once the signature is completed, avoid touching it and focus on proper storage and protection.
We don't recommend applying sprays or coatings over an autograph. Proper environmental conditions and UV-conscious storage or display are better ways to protect signed memorabilia.
Oils and moisture from your hands can transfer to memorabilia, which is one reason you should avoid touching the signature itself.
Certain glossy card surfaces may allow a fresh autograph to be removed with an alcohol wipe, but results vary by card, coating, and ink. Attempting this can damage the card's surface.
In some circumstances, products such as PEC-12 may remove ink from certain finished surfaces. However, they may also affect the underlying finish, so this should be approached cautiously.
Fabric is much less forgiving because ink can penetrate the fibers. Attempting to remove a signature can permanently damage or discolor the jersey.
Avoid unnecessary handling, keep the autograph out of direct sunlight, maintain a stable room-temperature environment, and use appropriate protective storage or displays.

Mr. Powers delivered on my request for this Cal Ripken jr. autograph. It was a nice size clean and perfect signature better than I expected. Mr. Powers team is quick to respond with any concerns you may have and keeps you posted on your item. I will absolutely be getting more signatures through them to finish my collection. I highly recommend Powers Sports to anyone that has any doubts. I use to do send ins with Steiner sports until he sold, to me Powers picked up where they left off and I couldnt be happier. Thank you
