Does an Autograph Authentication Sticker Hurt Your Card Grade?
If you've ever attended an autograph signing, you've probably faced this question:
Should I put an authentication sticker on the back of my card?
Many collectors worry that adding a Beckett, JSA, or PSA authentication sticker will lower the card's grade if they later submit it to a grading company.
The good news is:
No. An authentication sticker placed on the back of the card during a witnessed signing does not lower the card's grade.
Let's explain why.
Why Do Authentication Stickers Get Placed on Cards?
At many autograph signings, authentication companies such as:
will place a small authentication sticker directly on the back of the card after witnessing the athlete sign it.
This sticker serves as permanent identification that the item was authenticated during the signing.
What Is Witness Authentication?
Witness authentication means a representative from the authentication company actually watched the athlete sign the item.
Because they personally witnessed the signature being applied, they can certify that the autograph is genuine.
This is different from post-signing authentication.
When a company later authenticates an autograph that it did not witness, its authentication is based on an expert opinion after examining the signature.
Both services are valuable, but witnessed authentication provides documentation that the signature was observed in person.
Does the Sticker Affect the Card Grade?
No.
The authentication sticker itself does not count against the card's condition.
We recently received back a:
2024 Donruss Optic Bo Nix Downtown
that had:
- PSA 10 Card Grade
- PSA 10 Autograph Grade
On the back of the card was a Beckett Witness Authentication sticker that had been applied during the signing.
Even with the sticker attached, PSA awarded the card its highest possible grade.
That's a great real-world example showing that the authentication sticker did not prevent the card from receiving a Gem Mint 10.
Why Doesn't the Sticker Lower the Grade?
The sticker isn't considered damage to the card.
It was intentionally applied by the authentication company as part of the witnessed authentication process.
When PSAgrades the card, the presence of a legitimate witness authentication sticker does not automatically reduce the grade.
Instead, PSAevaluates the same four grading categories it always does:
- Centering
- Corners
- Edges
- Surface
A properly applied witness sticker does not prevent a card from achieving a PSA 10.
PSA Authentication vs. Witness Authentication
This is where many collectors get confused.
If you later submit a signed card to PSA for autograph authentication, PSA is offering its professional opinion that the autograph is genuine based on its review of the signature.
By contrast, a Beckett Witness or JSA Witness sticker indicates the autograph was actually observed by an authorized representative during the signing.
In other words:
Witness Authentication
- The signature was seen in person by an authentication representative.
Standard Authentication
- The signature is evaluated after the fact by autograph experts.
Both are respected forms of authentication, but they are different processes.
Some Collectors Still Prefer No Sticker
Not every collector likes authentication stickers on cards.
Some simply prefer the clean appearance of a card without any sticker on the back.
Others don't mind the sticker because they appreciate the added confidence that comes with witnessed authentication.
Neither preference is wrong.
It comes down to personal taste.
Should You Get the Sticker?
If your goal is to document that the autograph was witnessed in person, a witness authentication sticker is an excellent option.
If your primary concern has been whether the sticker will hurt your PSA card grade, our experience—and the Bo Nix PSA 10 example—shows that it does not prevent a card from receiving a Gem Mint 10.
Our Perspective at Powers Sports Memorabilia
We understand why collectors ask this question.
Nobody wants to do something that could potentially lower the grade of an expensive card.
Based on our experience submitting thousands of autographed collectibles, a legitimate witness authentication sticker applied during an autograph signing does not lower the card grade simply because it is present.
If you value first-person witness authentication, you can confidently choose that option without worrying that the sticker alone will cost you a PSA 10.
