If you've ever searched "Which card grading company is the best?", you've probably noticed that everyone seems to have a different answer.
Some collectors swear by PSA.
Others prefer Beckett.
Some vintage collectors love SGC.
Others appreciate CGC's pricing and turnaround times.
So who's actually the best?
The answer depends entirely on what you mean by "best."
Are you asking:
Let's break it all down.
Today, the four major grading companies are:
An important industry change is that Collectors, the parent company of PSA, now also owns both SGC and Beckett, while each grading company continues to operate as its own independent brand with separate grading operations. CGC remains the only one of these four major grading companies that is not owned by Collectors.
Before comparing grading companies, we need to define the question.
If you're asking:
"Who has the best graders?"
The honest answer is:
We don't know.
There is no independent industry test that measures grading accuracy across companies.
There isn't an official scoreboard that ranks which company grades the most consistently.
Every company has experienced grading mistakes.
Every company has cards that collectors believe were overgraded or undergraded.
So it's impossible to objectively say one company's graders are "better" than another's.
Instead, most collectors are usually asking something different.
They're really asking:
"Which grading company will make my card worth the most?"
When it comes to resale value, PSA is generally the industry leader.
For most sports cards, PSA-graded examples typically command the strongest prices in the marketplace.
There are exceptions, but as a general rule:
PSA usually produces the highest resale value.
There are several reasons for this.
PSA has built the strongest brand in the grading industry.
Collectors around the world recognize the PSA name.
Auction houses recognize it.
Dealers recognize it.
New collectors recognize it.
That level of brand recognition creates confidence, and confidence often translates into stronger demand.
Simply put, more collectors are searching specifically for PSA-graded cards than any other grading company.
PSA also grades significantly more cards than any other company.
Because they have graded tens of millions of cards over the years, they have built one of the largest databases of graded trading cards in the hobby.
That experience and scale have helped establish PSA as the market leader.
PSA is widely used for:
No matter what you collect, you'll find a large PSA market.
There was a time when Beckett was one of the most respected grading companies in the hobby.
Many collectors specifically sought:
Beckett also built an incredible reputation through its magazines and price guides.
However, over the past several years, Beckett has lost significant market share.
While Beckett still has loyal collectors, it no longer dominates the grading market the way it once did.
Today, PSA generally commands stronger resale values for most cards.
That doesn't mean Beckett grades are bad.
It simply means collector demand has shifted.
SGC has long been respected by vintage collectors.
Its black insert gives vintage cards a distinctive presentation that many collectors love.
SGC has also been known for:
While PSA usually brings higher resale values overall, SGC remains an excellent choice for many vintage collectors.
CGC has become increasingly popular with collectors looking for an affordable grading option.
Some advantages include:
CGC has also partnered with JSA (James Spence Authentication) for autograph authentication services, giving collectors another option when submitting signed cards.
While CGC slabs generally do not sell for as much as comparable PSA examples, they can make a lot of sense for collectors who value speed and affordability over maximizing resale value.
If your primary goal is to maximize resale value:
PSA is usually the best choice.
Because PSA has the strongest brand recognition, buyers are often willing to pay more for comparable PSA-graded cards than similar cards graded by other companies.
Again, there are exceptions.
Certain Beckett Black Labels, for example, can command extraordinary premiums.
But for the vast majority of cards, PSA remains the market leader.
If you're grading cards for your own collection, the answer becomes much more personal.
Some collectors love PSA.
Others love SGC's black insert.
Some prefer CGC because of the lower grading cost.
Others still enjoy Beckett holders.
If you aren't planning to sell the card, choose the company whose holder, pricing, turnaround time, and overall experience you prefer.
Generally speaking, CGC often offers some of the lowest grading costs among the four major companies.
For collectors grading lower-value cards, that can make a significant difference.
If your goal is simply:
CGC can be a very attractive option.
Turnaround times change throughout the year.
Historically, SGC built much of its reputation on fast turnaround times.
Today, CGC is also known for relatively quick service compared with PSA on many submission levels.
PSA has improved turnaround times significantly from the backlog years, but premium speed usually comes with premium pricing.
Always check each company's current service levels before submitting.
Two companies stand out for vintage:
Both have excellent reputations among vintage collectors.
PSA generally offers stronger resale values.
SGC remains extremely popular with collectors who appreciate its vintage presentation and black insert.
This is entirely subjective.
Some collectors prefer:
There isn't a right answer.
Buy the slab that makes you happy.
If someone asked us to recommend one grading company for the average collector, we'd choose PSA.
Not because we believe they necessarily have the "best graders."
There's simply no objective way to measure that.
Instead, we'd recommend PSA because:
If your goal is maximizing the value of an important card, PSA is usually the safest choice.
If you're grading lower-value cards and want to save money, CGC may be a better fit.
If you're a dedicated vintage collector, SGC remains an outstanding option.
Ultimately, the best grading company depends on your goals, not someone else's.
There isn't one grading company that's objectively "the best" at everything.
Each has strengths.
If you're looking for:
Highest resale value: PSA
Strong vintage reputation: PSA or SGC
Lower grading costs: CGC
Fast turnaround times: CGC or SGC (depending on current service levels)
Historic hobby brand: Beckett
The good news is that all four companies provide authentication and professional grading services.
The key is choosing the one that best matches your collecting goals.
It depends on your goals. If you're focused on resale value, PSA is generally considered the market leader. If you're collecting for yourself, the best company is the one that offers the pricing, turnaround time, and slab design you prefer.
Yes. Collectors, the parent company of PSA, acquired SGC in 2024 and Beckett in 2025. All three continue to operate as separate grading brands. CGC remains independent of Collectors.
For most sports cards, PSA-graded cards typically command the highest resale values.
Yes. Beckett remains a respected grading company, particularly for collectors who appreciate its history and premium Black Label designation, although it no longer has the same market share it once enjoyed.
Absolutely. SGC has earned a strong reputation for grading vintage cards and remains a popular choice among vintage collectors.
In many cases, yes. CGC often offers lower grading fees and faster turnaround times than PSA, making it an attractive option for lower-value cards or collectors on a budget.
If maximizing resale value is your priority, PSA is generally the best choice. If you're grading for your personal collection, choose the company whose pricing, turnaround time, and slab style best fit your preferences.
