Whether you're mailing a trading card, football helmet, signed baseball, jersey, or Funko Pop, using the right packaging materials is one of the most important parts of the autograph signing process. Proper packaging helps prevent bent cards, cracked helmets, damaged corners, dirty jerseys, and smudged autographs while your collectibles are in transit.
At Powers Sports Memorabilia, we've handled hundreds of autograph signings and have seen just about every shipping mistake imaginable. Fortunately, most damage can be avoided by using the proper supplies and taking a few extra minutes to package your collectibles correctly.
This guide explains the best packaging materials for shipping sports memorabilia, how to protect different types of collectibles, and the methods we recommend to help your items arrive safely.
Sports memorabilia often represents significant monetary and sentimental value. A bent rookie card, scratched helmet, or smudged autograph can permanently reduce the value of an item.
Good packaging protects against:
Using quality packing materials is much less expensive than replacing a damaged collectible.
Trading cards require some of the most careful packaging because they can bend easily.
Before shipping any card, place it inside:
The penny sleeve protects the card surface from scratches while the rigid top loader prevents the card from bending.
Once inside the top loader, sandwich the card between two pieces of sturdy cardboard. Tape the cardboard together so the card cannot move during shipping.
Finally, place everything inside a rigid mailer or, even better, a shipping box.
The goal is to eliminate movement and prevent the package from bending during transit.
Although rigid mailers work well for some items, we strongly recommend using boxes whenever possible.
Boxes provide better protection because they resist crushing and bending much better than envelopes or flat mailers.
Boxes also help protect collectibles if heavier packages are stacked on top during shipping.
We've consistently found that boxed shipments arrive in better condition than mailers.
Signed photos should be packaged much like trading cards.
Use:
Although large rigid mailers can work, boxes provide much greater protection against bending.
Never ship loose photos without rigid protection.
Jerseys are relatively durable, but they still need protection.
Before placing a jersey into the shipping box, seal it inside a plastic bag.
This accomplishes two important things:
If your jersey already contains signatures, plastic protection becomes even more important.
When returning your jersey, we also place it inside a plastic bag before shipping it back.
Football helmets are one of the most popular items sent to autograph signings.
Because of their size and weight, they should always be shipped inside a sturdy box with plenty of padding.
Before placing the helmet into the box:
Movement inside the box is one of the biggest causes of scratches and damage.
Autographed balls should also be placed inside a plastic bag before shipping.
The plastic helps protect the surface from dirt, moisture, and contact with other packing materials.
After bagging the ball:
Proper cushioning keeps the autograph surface protected throughout transit.
Funko Pops have become one of the most popular autograph items in recent years.
If you're mailing one for a signing, always use a Funko Pop protector.
The protector helps prevent:
After placing the Funko inside its protector, ship it inside a sturdy box with additional padding.
Collectors place a premium on mint packaging, so proper protection is extremely important.
Baseball bats require different packaging than most memorabilia.
The easiest method is using a bat shipping tube.
Bat tubes provide excellent protection while keeping shipping costs relatively reasonable.
If the bat already has signatures on it, wrap the signed portion in a plastic bag before placing it inside the tube.
This helps prevent moisture and accidental smudging during transit.
Whenever you're shipping an item that already has signatures, protecting those existing autographs should become your highest priority.
We recommend placing any signed item inside a clean plastic bag before adding any bubble wrap or packing material.
This prevents:
It's a simple step that offers significant protection.
The shipping company you choose matters almost as much as the packaging itself.
Generally speaking, we recommend:
Both companies provide consistent tracking updates and dependable delivery.
While the United States Postal Service can certainly work, we've found that USPS tracking is sometimes inconsistent and delivery times can vary.
Whenever you're shipping valuable memorabilia, dependable tracking gives collectors greater peace of mind.
Some of the biggest mistakes collectors make include:
Most shipping damage occurs because items are able to move around during transit.
If your collectible cannot shift inside the package, you've already eliminated many potential problems.
The best packaging materials are the ones that keep your memorabilia clean, secure, and protected from movement.
Whether you're mailing a rookie card, signed jersey, football helmet, Funko Pop, or baseball bat, spending a little extra time packaging your item correctly can prevent expensive damage and help ensure your collectible arrives safely.
At Powers Sports Memorabilia, we've processed hundreds of autograph signings, and we've found that careful packaging is one of the simplest ways collectors can protect both the condition and long-term value of their memorabilia.
A sturdy shipping box with proper padding is usually the safest option. Boxes provide much better protection than envelopes or thin mailers.

Mr. Powers delivered on my request for this Cal Ripken jr. autograph. It was a nice size clean and perfect signature better than I expected. Mr. Powers team is quick to respond with any concerns you may have and keeps you posted on your item. I will absolutely be getting more signatures through them to finish my collection. I highly recommend Powers Sports to anyone that has any doubts. I use to do send ins with Steiner sports until he sold, to me Powers picked up where they left off and I couldnt be happier. Thank you
