Powers Sports Memorabilia

2018 is shaping up to be a huge year for sports autographs.  Signed baseballs, signed baseball jerseys, and signed football helmets all saw some incredible product released in 2017.  Let’s take a look back at why the success of 2017 is creating such a buzz for 2018.

Tons of new superstars have come on the scene.  Notably Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, Deshaun Watson, Kareem Hunt, Leonard Fournette, Kyle Kuzma, and Ben Simmons.

Super Bowl 52 featured the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles, 2 of the NFLs most historic franchises.  Tom Brady is cementing his legacy as the greatest NFL player of all-time.  His autographed memorabilia is always going up in value, with a Patriots signed jersey being one of the most popular items.

The Eagles came away with a HUGE win and saw their autographed memorabilia fly of the shelves.  Nick Foles winning the Super Bowl MVP made him a Philadelphia legend. You can read more about the Philadelphia Eagles here.

Baseball saw the explosion of Aaron Judge, the future of the New York Yankees.  Not only did he win American League Rookie of the Year, but set the all-time Rookie Home Run record, breaking Mark McGwire’s.  Cody Bellinger along with Corey Seager helped lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to their 1st World Series appearance since 1988.  The future is BRIGHT for those two.

The Houston Astros almost came out of nowhere to win their 1st ever World Series championship.  Jose Altuve (2017 AL MVP), George Springer (World Series MVP), and Alex Bregman were key players in leading that charge.  Autographed 2017 World Series baseballs and the framed Houston Chronicle newspaper were some of fans’ favorite items this year.

The 2016 World Series champion Chicago Cubs autographs are still going strong.  Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, and Ben Zobrist are among the most collected including the famous Chicago Tribune framed newspaper. You can read about the history of the Chicago Cubs here.

Adrian Beltre became the newest member of baseball’s 3,000 hit club.  His autograph jumped up in value right after that hit.  Signed 3,000 hit logo baseballs, bats, and jerseys were among his most popular items.

The Golden State Warriors continue to dominate not just the NBA, but also the NBA autograph scene.  Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green have all become among the most popular Warriors autographs.  Signed jerseys, basketballs, and photos are among their most popular items.  Kevin Durant even did an autograph signing in 2018 where customers could send in their own items to have signed.

A few other athletes came out of hiding to do a rare autograph signing.  Most notably Vin Scully, Karl Malone, Kevin Garnett, Penny Hardaway, and Tony Gonzalez.   Grant Wistrom, the former Nebraska Cornhuskers 3 x National Champion was one of my favorites.  Such a great guy.

The evolution of 3rd party autograph authentication changed again with Beckett Authentication coming into the fold.  Customers now have 3 excellent options to have their autographs authenticated: Beckett, PSA/DNA, and JSA.

2017 also saw the world lose some of its’ favorite athletes.  Roy Halladay, Y.A. Tittle, Jake LaMotta, Ara Parseghian, Cortez Kennedy, were among them to pass away.

Sports Memorabilia and autographs in general always put that huge smile on someone’s face during the Christmas season and 2017 was no exception.  Astros, Patriots, Warriors, and Penguins fans all brought home championships home.
