Again, PSM did a great job!

One of the best parts of collecting autographed sports memorabilia is being able to display it. Whether you have a signed jersey from your favorite player, an autographed football, a collection of graded sports cards, or a signed basketball, displaying your collection lets you enjoy it instead of keeping everything packed away.
However, displaying autographed memorabilia also exposes it to some of the biggest threats to autograph quality: UV light, changing temperatures, humidity, and improper framing materials.
The goal is simple: create a display that looks great while protecting the item and autograph for years to come.
If there is one rule collectors should remember when displaying autographs, it is this:
Keep your autographed memorabilia out of direct sunlight.
Sunlight contains ultraviolet radiation that can contribute to the breakdown of dyes and pigments in inks. Over time, repeated UV exposure can cause an autograph to fade or change appearance.
This is especially important because fading usually happens gradually. You may not notice a difference from one day to the next, but prolonged exposure can eventually cause significant changes to an autograph.
Whenever possible, display your collection in a room without windows.
If that isn't practical, think carefully about where your memorabilia sits in relation to the windows. Instead of placing an item directly across from a window where sunlight can hit it, consider displaying it along a side wall where direct sunlight is less likely to reach it.
Even with UV protection, avoiding direct sunlight is still the best approach.
UV-protected cases are one of the easiest ways to add another layer of protection to displayed memorabilia.
Display cases are available for many common collectibles, including:
UV-protective acrylic or glass is designed to reduce the amount of damaging ultraviolet radiation that reaches the collectible.
Different products may advertise different levels of UV protection, so check the manufacturer's specifications rather than assuming every display case offers the same protection.
And remember: UV-protected does not mean you should put an autograph in direct sunlight.
Think of UV protection as an additional defense rather than permission to display an item anywhere.
Autographed jerseys are some of the best-looking pieces of sports memorabilia when properly framed.
But there is more to quality jersey framing than simply putting a jersey behind glass.
A good frame should protect the autograph and the jersey itself.
When having an autographed jersey professionally framed, consider asking about:
UV-protected glazing. This helps reduce the jersey and autograph's exposure to UV radiation.
Acid-free matting and backing materials. Materials used inside a frame can interact with textiles and paper over long periods. Acid-free and conservation-grade materials are designed to reduce the risk of discoloration and deterioration caused by acidic framing materials.
How the jersey is mounted. This is extremely important and sometimes overlooked.
Ideally, an autographed jersey should be mounted in a way that causes as little permanent alteration as possible.
We generally prefer having jerseys carefully pinned or sewn into position rather than permanently glued or taped to the backing.
Why?
Because you may eventually want the jersey removed.
Maybe you want a different frame. Maybe you're redesigning your memorabilia room. Maybe you're adding another autograph to the jersey. Or perhaps you simply want to take the jersey out years from now.
If the jersey has been permanently glued to the backing, removing it could potentially damage the fabric.
A more reversible mounting method gives you additional flexibility.
Before having an important signed jersey framed, ask the framer exactly how the jersey will be attached to the mat or backing.
That's a question worth asking before the work begins.
You will often hear professional framers talk about acid-free matting, but what does that actually mean?
Traditional paper and cardboard products can contain acids that contribute to deterioration and discoloration as materials age.
Conservation-oriented framing materials are designed to minimize those interactions.
For valuable memorabilia, look for materials described as acid-free, lignin-free, archival, or conservation-grade, and ask your framer what materials will actually come into contact with the collectible.
This is especially important because framing is usually intended to be long-term.
You don't want to spend money protecting an autographed jersey from sunlight while mounting it against materials that may cause other problems over time.
The frame itself also matters.
For an important autographed jersey or photograph, a quality wood frame can create a much better presentation and provide a sturdy structure for the display.
This doesn't mean every collectible needs an expensive custom frame.
The amount you spend should make sense for the item you're displaying.
But if you're framing an important jersey from a favorite athlete, quality framing can be worth the additional expenseβespecially when you're planning to display the item for many years.
Sports cards are easier to display because of their size, but the same basic rules apply.
Keep them away from sunlight.
For raw cards, use appropriate card protection such as penny sleeves, top loaders, or other protective holders before placing them in a display.
Graded cards already have the protection of their slabs, but that doesn't mean they should be exposed to direct sunlight.
Collectors who display multiple cards can use enclosed card display cases with UV-protective acrylic or glass.
A wall-mounted display containing several rookie cards or autographed cards can look fantastic while keeping the collection organized.
Football and basketball display cases are another popular option.
A good display case can protect the item from:
Again, placement matters.
A signed football sitting inside a UV-protected case directly in front of a sunny window is still not an ideal setup.
Use the display case and choose a good location.
Display conditions shouldn't be considered separately from storage conditions.
The same basic environmental rules apply.
Try to maintain a relatively stable, comfortable indoor temperature and avoid environments with extreme heat, cold, or humidity.
That means areas such as garages, unfinished attics, sheds, or other spaces experiencing major seasonal temperature swings generally aren't ideal locations for valuable autographed memorabilia.
A finished basement or interior memorabilia room with a relatively consistent climate can often be a much better option.
The key word is consistency.
Collectors understandably spend a lot of time worrying about protecting the autograph.
But you also need to protect the item underneath it.
A signed jersey is still fabric.
A signed baseball has leather and stitching.
Sports cards contain paper, coatings, inks, and other materials.
Photographs and posters have their own preservation considerations.
Good memorabilia preservation protects both the autograph and the collectible.
That's why the best display setup combines several strategies:
Avoid direct sunlight + use UV protection + maintain a stable environment + use appropriate archival materials.
No single precaution does everything.
We don't believe collectors should be afraid to display their memorabilia.
That's part of the fun.
An autographed jersey from your favorite player deserves to be seen. So does the signed football you've had for 20 years or the rookie card you finally added to your collection.
You simply want to display those items intelligently.
Keep them away from direct sunlight, use UV-protected cases or framing whenever possible, maintain a stable indoor environment, and make sure valuable jerseys are framed using materials and mounting techniques designed with long-term preservation in mind.
A little planning today can help keep your collection looking great for years to come.
No. Direct sunlight should be avoided whenever possible because UV exposure can contribute to fading and deterioration of inks and other materials.
UV-protected glazing can substantially reduce UV exposure, but it shouldn't be treated as complete protection against every cause of fading. Keeping memorabilia away from direct sunlight remains important.
Look for UV-protected glazing, acid-free or conservation-grade materials, quality construction, and a reversible mounting method that avoids permanently gluing the jersey to the backing.
We prefer mounting methods such as careful pinning or sewing that allow the jersey to be removed later with minimal risk of damage.
Acid-free and conservation-grade framing materials help reduce the risk of long-term discoloration or deterioration caused by acidic paper and backing materials.
Absolutely. Graded cards are excellent display pieces, but they should still be kept away from direct sunlight. A UV-protected card display case can provide additional protection.
Ideally, choose a climate-controlled interior room with minimal direct sunlight and relatively stable temperature and humidity.
