Almost every day I get asked, "What's my baseball worth?" That comes down to many factors including who signed it.
For the purpose of this article, I am going to just talk about how the actual baseball itself affects the value.
Here are 5 things to look for.
#1 TYPE OF BALL
Every autographed baseball of any current player should be on an official Major League Baseball. With the exception of All Star and World Series logo baseballs, the official MLB baseball is what everyone wants.
Getting an autograph on an Official League ball or a plastic China baseball is practically worthless.
When possible, always go with the official MLB ball.
#2 COLOR OF PEN
Always get a baseball autographed in a blue ball point pen. Blue lasts longer and is much bolder of a color.
Black tends to fade very quickly.
Same thing with a sharpie. Never get a baseball autographed with a sharpie.
#3 SMUDGES OR FADING OF SIGNATURE
No one wants to see a smudge or a faded signature. Everyone wants a clean and bold signature. The better the signature, the more desirable. Authentication companies have even started grading the signature itself along with the autograph.
#4 CONDITION OF BASEBALL
With the exception of older autographed baseballs such as Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, and Mickey Mantle, every current players autograph should be on a clean, white baseball. Or a pearl it is called.
Staining or spotting on the ball tends to bring down its value.
In regards to a Babe Ruth signature, yes, those baseballs will all have spotting and staining due to the age of the ball.
#5 AUTHENITCATION
Having your autographed baseball authenticated by JSA, PSA DNA, or Beckett Authentication always adds to the value of your baseball.
If you were to sell it, a buyer would want to see this authentication with your item.
A Babe Ruth autographed baseball for example sells for WAY more authenticated by one of those companies.
BONUS TIP!
One more thing that can add value to your autographed baseball are inscriptions such as when a player adds his MVP year or when he won the World Series MVP.
Personalizations like TO JOHN, always devalue the autographed baseball.
Reason being is a ball with TO JOHN on it is hard to sell to someone named Matt!

I have the 2nd grandslam ball that Fernando tatis hit 4/23/1999. It was supposed to go to the hall of fame but went to a personal collection. I ended up with it a few years ago and now I’m interested in the value of the ball. Wondering what it would go for? Any ideas?

I have a cushioned official league cork center ball, 7000 prep league horsehide cover official weight & size from Davis Sporting Goods located in Tulsa, OK. Signed by Clete Boyer & Ken Boyer at Oertles Dept Store in Tulsa, OK while playing for the St Louis Cardinals. Signed by Warren Spahn at Spahner’s Dept Store in Tulsa, OK while playing for Milwaukee Braves. All signed in blue ink. Signed by Bud Bloomfield while playing for the Tulsa Oilers which was minor league for St Louis Cardinals. The players rented a house catty corner to my grandmother’s house so I got to interact with the different players as a young boy. Does this ball have any value other than great memories for me?
I also have an Official Gillette League – World Series Special still in cases in its original plastic. This is signed by a few names mentioned are: Smokey Burgess-catcher, Dick Radatz-first base, Albie Pearson-outfield to name a few. Does this have any value?

What if it the ball signed by a future hall of famer (sure 1st ballot) is the home run he hit. And he signed it notating the actual number of the home run hit and then his autograph.

To Jon. Very nice collection you got going. I miss the old days! Collecting is great and never needs to be departed with. With the exception of death of course.
To Tim on the 600th hundred ball. One word. “Provenance”. Proving the ball is authentic by any of the 4 companies will require you to show how the ball went from the bat to you. Very often historic quests get taped. So, if you can get the identity of the fan who gets the ball and how it made it to the next person and then to you through photographs, videos, receipts, etc. will help you to prove your case.
To Jackie. Yes, a Lefty O’Doul signed ball is valuable. In the last 3 months on eBay, one sold for $1,000. And that is not the best you can do. Some auction houses will get you much better prices if the condition of your ball is very good, but they also charge you for the service.
To Vinne. ANYTHING Yankees is worth something. In your case, your “something” is a good amount of money. If the ball is 65 yrs. old, then we’re talking about the 1957 Yankees. A great team with Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, and many more. They lost to the Atlanta Braves that year but won the World Series the year before and again the year after this ball was signed. So, most of the players on the ball have value, and collectively the value goes up as well.

When I was a kid I would write to players. Ended up with about 50 autographs and some touching letters of response from some widows. I’ll never sell them and I don’t care what their monetary valley is. Dixie Howell’s widow, for example, wrote me back a few times. Dave Dravecky, Brett Butler, Vern Law, Cal Hogue, Paul La Palme, MIke Bielecki, Robin Yount, Claude Osteen, Greg Maddux (when he was with the Cubs), etc…

I found it interesting when you said that a blue pen lasts longer and much bolder in color since black tends to fade very quickly. This is something that I will consider once I shop for baseball with vintage autographs. Maybe, it would be best for me to consider the quality of the pen used. I would imagine how buying vintage autographs would help me a lot in my plan to collect vintage items. Thanks! https://wrightcollectibles.com/autographs
