When you send a valuable collectible to an autograph signing, getting the item safely to the signing is only part of the process. You also need to think about tracking, insurance, signature requirements, and what happens if a package is lost or damaged.
Whether you are shipping a jersey, helmet, baseball, trading card, photo, bat, or another collectible to Powers Sports Memorabilia, you should always know where your package is and understand exactly how much protection you have if something goes wrong.
One of the biggest mistakes collectors can make is assuming that a shipping label automatically protects the full value of their memorabilia. That is not necessarily the case.
Here is what collectors should know about insurance and tracking when shipping sports memorabilia to an autograph signing.
The first rule is simple:
Never ship valuable sports memorabilia without tracking.
Tracking gives you a record of the package moving through the carrier's network and provides confirmation when the package reaches its destination.
The primary carriers collectors commonly use are:
For shipments being sent to Powers Sports Memorabilia, we generally recommend UPS whenever possible.
After handling a large number of customer shipments over the years, we have found UPS tracking and estimated transit times to generally be more consistent for our needs.
Consistency becomes especially important when you are shipping an item for an autograph signing.
Autograph signings have deadlines. Your collectible needs to arrive before the signing takes place, and cutting the shipping time too close creates unnecessary risk.
For example, if UPS provides an estimated one-day transit time between two locations, we generally find those transit estimates to be dependable. USPS delivery estimates can sometimes be less predictable, which is something collectors should consider when an autograph signing deadline is approaching.
This does not mean a package can never be delayed with UPS or that every USPS package will arrive late. Any carrier can experience delays.
The important point is to give yourself plenty of time and use a service with detailed tracking.
This depends partly on the carrier you use.
When customers ship items to Powers Sports Memorabilia, they are sending them to a business address.
Packages delivered through UPS or FedEx to our business location will generally have someone available to receive them during business hours.
If you are shipping through USPS and have an especially important or valuable collectible, you may want to consider adding a signature service.
Not every package necessarily needs signature confirmation, but it can provide an additional delivery record for higher-value memorabilia.
If you are sending something valuable, you should consider how much financial protection you need before you ship it.
Collectors sometimes focus entirely on the autograph fee while forgetting that the unsigned item itself may already have substantial value.
Imagine sending in:
The autograph you are purchasing might cost $100, while the item being shipped could be worth significantly more.
Those are two very different numbers.
If you need your shipment protected for a specific amount, make sure you understand the carrier's terms and purchase the appropriate coverage when creating your shipping label.
Powers Sports Memorabilia offers customers the option to purchase order protection on eligible orders through our website.
However, there is an extremely important distinction collectors need to understand:
Order protection does not necessarily protect the entire value of the memorabilia you sent to us.
It relates to the value of the purchase you made through Powers Sports Memorabilia.
For example, suppose you own a valuable item containing 20 existing autographs.
You send that item to us and purchase one additional autograph for $100.
If you purchased applicable order protection on that $100 order, that does not mean your entire multi-signed collectible is protected for its full market value.
The protection applies according to the terms of the protection associated with your order—not whatever your collectible may be worth.
That distinction is especially important for collectors sending high-value memorabilia.
This is where collectors need to plan ahead.
If your collectible is worth substantially more than the amount of your Powers Sports Memorabilia order and you believe additional shipping insurance is necessary, contact us before the return shipment and arrange to provide your own shipping label with the appropriate coverage.
Do not assume that the value of the underlying collectible is automatically covered.
This is particularly important for items such as:
The more difficult an item would be to replace, the more important it becomes to understand your shipping protection before sending it.
For most domestic return shipments, Powers Sports Memorabilia uses UPS.
There are exceptions.
If an order is being shipped to a P.O. box, a different shipping method may be required. International shipments may also use another carrier, and we commonly use DHL for international shipments.
The appropriate service depends on the destination and circumstances of the order.
No.
This is something we want collectors to clearly understand before sending high-value items.
We do not automatically insure your return package for the full market value of memorabilia that you send to us.
If additional insurance is important to you, contact us and arrange to provide a return shipping label with the appropriate insurance or coverage.
This is especially important when the value of your collectible is significantly greater than the amount you are spending on the autograph signing.
Collectors should not assume these terms mean the same thing.
Order protection relates to the eligible purchase you made through Powers Sports Memorabilia and is available at an additional cost.
Shipping insurance or carrier coverage is something you may purchase or arrange when creating a shipping label, subject to the carrier's terms and limitations.
If you have a $2,000 collectible and purchase a $100 autograph, protecting the $100 transaction is not the same thing as protecting a $2,000 collectible.
Always evaluate the value of the entire item, not simply the cost of the autograph you are adding.
When sending an item to Powers Sports Memorabilia, make sure you provide an accurate email address during checkout.
This allows us to communicate important information regarding your order and helps us confirm your item when it has been received.
For valuable collectibles, having a clear communication trail is another simple way to make the autograph signing process easier.
Tracking is helpful, but it cannot eliminate shipping delays.
If an autograph signing has a mail-in deadline, do not plan your shipment around the absolute best-case delivery estimate.
Weather, carrier delays, incorrect routing, holidays, and other unexpected issues can affect delivery times.
Shipping early gives you additional protection.
A collectible arriving several days early is rarely a problem.
A collectible arriving one day after the mail-in deadline can be a major problem.
Before sending memorabilia to an autograph signing, check the following:
Taking a few extra minutes before shipping can prevent a lot of confusion later.

Collectors preparing a mail-in autograph order should also read:
Together, these guides walk you through the process of preparing, protecting, shipping, and receiving your collectibles when participating in an autograph signing.
Yes. We strongly recommend using a shipping service that provides tracking whenever you send memorabilia to an autograph signing. Tracking provides a record of the package's progress and delivery.
We generally recommend UPS because we have found its tracking and transit times to be consistent for the large number of packages involved with our autograph signings.
Yes. FedEx also provides tracking and can be used to ship collectibles to our business address.
Yes. However, we generally prefer UPS based on our experience with tracking and transit-time consistency. If using USPS for a valuable item, you may also want to consider an appropriate signature service.
Not necessarily for every package. Powers Sports Memorabilia receives packages at a business address. If you are using USPS or sending a particularly valuable collectible, you may choose to add a signature service for additional delivery documentation.
If losing or damaging the item would create a substantial financial loss, you should carefully evaluate the insurance or coverage options available through your shipping carrier before sending it.
No. Do not assume that your collectible is automatically insured for its full market value during the return shipment.
Order protection is an optional additional purchase associated with your order and is subject to its applicable terms. It should not be interpreted as automatically covering the full market value of memorabilia you supplied.
Contact Powers Sports Memorabilia about providing your own return shipping label with the appropriate insurance or coverage. This is particularly important for valuable multi-signed, vintage, graded, or game-used items.
Most domestic return shipments are sent through UPS. Other carriers may be used when necessary, including for P.O. boxes and international shipments. DHL is commonly used for international shipments.
Providing an accurate email address at checkout helps us communicate with you and confirm receipt of your item.
Always allow extra time beyond the carrier's estimated transit time. Shipping early reduces the chance that an unexpected carrier delay causes your item to miss the signing deadline.

Mr. Powers delivered on my request for this Cal Ripken jr. autograph. It was a nice size clean and perfect signature better than I expected. Mr. Powers team is quick to respond with any concerns you may have and keeps you posted on your item. I will absolutely be getting more signatures through them to finish my collection. I highly recommend Powers Sports to anyone that has any doubts. I use to do send ins with Steiner sports until he sold, to me Powers picked up where they left off and I couldnt be happier. Thank you
