If you've ever looked at a graded sports card, you've probably heard someone mention its population report, often shortened to simply "pop report."
A sports card population report tells collectors how many copies of a specific card have been graded by a grading company and how those cards are distributed across each grade.
Population reports are one of the most useful tools available to sports card collectors because they provide insight into a card's rarity in high grades.
Here's how they work.
Every major grading company—including PSA, Beckett, SGC, and CGC—maintains a population report for the cards they have graded.
The report tracks:
For example, if PSA has graded a particular card 1,000 times, the population report may show:
This helps collectors understand how difficult it is for that particular card to achieve a high grade.
Population reports give collectors valuable information about the scarcity of highly graded cards.
If only a small percentage of submitted cards receive a PSA 10, collectors know that Gem Mint examples are much harder to find.
Conversely, if thousands of cards have earned PSA 10 grades, the card may be easier to obtain in top condition.
Population reports can help collectors:
Some cards are much more difficult to grade than others.
A great example is the 1993 SP Derek Jeter Rookie Card (#279).
Because of its full-foil front, the card is extremely susceptible to scratches, chipping, and print defects.
As a result, PSA 10 examples are exceptionally difficult to obtain.
Modern sports cards, on the other hand, are generally produced using improved printing technology and higher-quality materials, making Gem Mint grades more common.
The population report reflects these differences.
Population reports are not static.
Every time a grading company grades another copy of a card, the report changes.
As more cards are submitted, the total population grows, and the number of cards receiving each grade continues to increase.
That's why it's important to remember that a population report is simply a snapshot of the grading company's database at a particular point in time.
Many collectors assume population reports represent the exact number of graded cards that exist.
That's not always true.
One reason is that collectors frequently crack cards out of their holders and submit them again in hopes of receiving a higher grade.
Others crack cards out to:
Unless the original certification is removed from the grading company's database, those cards may still be counted in the population report.
This means the actual number of unique graded cards can be lower than the reported population.
One of the best examples is the 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan Rookie Card (#57).
Because of its tremendous value, collectors have cracked and resubmitted this card countless times in hopes of improving its grade.
As a result, the population report almost certainly includes duplicate submissions of the same physical card over many years.
This doesn't make the report useless—it simply means collectors should understand its limitations.
Population reports should be used as one tool—not the only tool—when evaluating a sports card.
A low population does not automatically make a card valuable.
Collectors should also consider:
Population reports provide valuable context, but they are only one piece of the overall picture.
Sports card population reports are one of the best research tools available to collectors.
They help you understand how many copies of a card have been graded, how difficult it is to earn high grades, and how scarce top-condition examples may be.
While population reports aren't perfect due to crack-outs and resubmissions, they remain an essential resource for anyone buying, selling, or collecting graded sports cards.
A sports card population report shows how many copies of a specific card have been graded by a grading company and how those cards are distributed across each grade.
They help collectors understand the rarity of high-grade examples and how difficult a particular card is to grade.
They are very useful but not perfect. Crack-outs and resubmissions can cause the same physical card to be counted more than once.
PSA, Beckett, SGC, and CGC all maintain population reports for the cards they have graded.
Not necessarily. Population is only one factor. Player demand, rarity, historical significance, and collector interest all contribute to a card's value.
