What Does a PSA 10 Actually Mean?

July 20, 2026 4 min read

PSA 10

For many collectors, PSA 10 is the gold standard of sports card grading.

You'll often see sellers advertise a card as a "PSA 10 Gem Mint," but what does that actually mean?

Does it mean the card is perfect?

Does it mean the autograph is perfect?

Not necessarily.

In this guide, we'll explain exactly what a PSA 10 means, how PSA assigns the grade, and what collectors should know before buying or submitting cards for grading.

What Is a PSA 10?

A PSA 10 is the highest numerical grade that PSA assigns to a sports card.

The official designation is:

PSA Gem Mint 10

Receiving a PSA 10 means the card has met PSA's standards for a Gem Mint example of that particular card.

Many collectors mistakenly believe a PSA 10 means the card is absolutely flawless.

That isn't actually the case.

Does PSA 10 Mean the Card Is Perfect?

No.

A PSA 10 does not necessarily mean the card is perfect.

Instead, it means the card meets PSA's Gem Mint grading standards.

According to PSA, a Gem Mint 10 card is a virtually perfect card, not an absolutely perfect one.

Minor manufacturing imperfections can still be present as long as they do not significantly affect the overall eye appeal of the card.

What Does PSA Look At When Grading a Card?

When PSA grades a card, the graders evaluate four primary areas:

Centering

Centering measures how well the printed image is positioned on the card.

For a PSA Gem Mint 10, PSA states the front centering should generally be no worse than approximately 55/45, while the back may be as much as 75/25.

Corners

Corners should appear sharp and clean.

Soft corners, fraying, whitening, or rounding can lower a card's grade.

A PSA 10 should have four sharp corners.

Edges

Graders examine all four edges for:

  • Chipping
  • Whitening
  • Fraying
  • Rough cuts
  • Damage

Clean edges are essential for achieving a Gem Mint grade.

Surface

The surface is carefully inspected for:

  • Scratches
  • Print defects
  • Creases
  • Stains
  • Indentations
  • Gloss
  • Overall eye appeal

A PSA 10 should retain its original gloss and be free of staining.

PSA does allow for a very slight printing imperfection if it does not negatively affect the overall appearance of the card.

PSA's Official Gem Mint 10 Standards

According to PSA, a Gem Mint 10 card generally includes:

  • Four perfectly sharp corners
  • Sharp focus
  • Full original gloss
  • No staining
  • Excellent overall eye appeal
  • Front centering approximately 55/45 or better
  • Reverse centering approximately 75/25 or better

While these standards are publicly available, grading still involves human evaluation.

Does a PSA 10 Mean the Autograph Is a 10?

No.

This is one of the most common points of confusion among collectors.

If you have an autographed card that simply says:

PSA 10

That usually means the card itself received a grade of 10.

It does not automatically mean the autograph received a grade.

If the autograph has been graded, PSA will indicate that separately on the label.

For example:

  • Card: PSA 10
  • Auto: 10

or

  • GEM MT 10
  • AUTO 10

The autograph grade is its own evaluation and is separate from the card grade.

Is Every PSA 10 Exactly the Same?

Not necessarily.

Because grading involves trained human graders, two PSA 10 cards can have slight differences.

One PSA 10 may have slightly better centering than another.

Another may have slightly sharper corners.

As long as both cards meet PSA's Gem Mint standards, both can receive the same grade.

This is one reason collectors sometimes compare multiple PSA 10 copies before purchasing a high-end card.

Is It Worth Chasing a PSA 10?

That depends on your collecting goals.

Many collectors specifically target PSA 10 cards because:

  • They represent the highest PSA grade.
  • They are generally the most desirable.
  • They often command the strongest resale values.
  • They provide confidence in the card's condition.

However, PSA 9 cards can often look very similar while costing significantly less.

For collectors focused on enjoying the hobby rather than achieving the highest possible grade, a PSA 9 may offer excellent value.

Our Perspective at Powers Sports Memorabilia

A PSA 10 is an outstanding grade, but it's important to understand what it actually represents.

It doesn't mean the card is absolutely perfect.

It means the card has met PSA's Gem Mint grading standards.

Likewise, if an autographed card simply says PSA 10, don't assume the signature also received a 10 grade.

Always read the label carefully to determine whether the card, the autograph, or both have been graded.

Understanding the difference can help you make more informed buying decisions.

Final Thoughts

A PSA 10 is the highest grade PSA awards and represents a card that is virtually perfect according to PSA's grading standards.

The grade is based on the card's:

  • Centering
  • Corners
  • Edges
  • Surface

While a PSA 10 is highly desirable, it isn't necessarily a flawless card.

Knowing exactly what the grade meansβ€”and what it doesn't meanβ€”can help you buy, sell, and collect with greater confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a PSA 10?

A PSA 10, also called a Gem Mint 10, is the highest numerical grade PSA assigns to a sports card.

Does PSA 10 mean the card is perfect?

No. PSA describes a Gem Mint 10 as a virtually perfect card. Minor manufacturing imperfections may still be present if they don't significantly affect the card's overall appearance.

What does PSA grade on a card?

PSA evaluates four primary areas: centering, corners, edges, and surface.

Does a PSA 10 include the autograph grade?

Not necessarily. If the label only says PSA 10, it generally refers to the card's grade. If the autograph was also graded, PSA will indicate that separately on the label.

What centering is allowed on a PSA 10?

According to PSA, a Gem Mint 10 card generally allows approximately 55/45 centering on the front and 75/25 on the back.

Is a PSA 9 much different from a PSA 10?

Sometimes the differences are very small. A PSA 9 can often look nearly identical to a PSA 10, although the PSA 10 typically commands a higher premium in the marketplace.
